Antique Japanese Brass Tea Kettle with Brazier Stand
This refined Japanese tea service consists of a brass kettle paired with its original brazier stand and removable burner insert, a complete heating arrangement designed to gently warm water or tea at the table.
The kettle itself is formed from thin, spun brass and decorated with engraved panels featuring stylized floral designs and auspicious characters, all set against a warm red-toned ground. The decoration and construction are characteristic of Japanese household and export wares produced in the late Meiji to early Taishō period, when functional objects were still treated as works of decorative craft.
The brazier base is pierced on the front to allow airflow and access, and inside it holds a separate cylindrical burner cup with a mesh top. This insert was intended to hold charcoal or a spirit-based fuel, providing steady, low heat beneath the kettle without direct flame contact. The burner cup fits precisely into the base and is an essential, often-missing component.
A rattan-wrapped swing handle completes the kettle, offering insulation and balance when lifting. All elements show consistent age, wear, and patina, indicating they have remained together as a set.
The brass surfaces have not been polished and retain a deep, honest patina developed over decades of use. This piece has been preserved as found, without restoration, allowing its age and history to remain visible.
