Hydrangea petiolaris (Climbing Hydrangea)
Classic. Majestic. Worth the wait.
Hydrangea petiolaris is a time-tested heirloom vine—slow to start, but breathtaking once established. With its large white lacecap blooms, deep green foliage, and peeling cinnamon-colored bark, it adds an air of maturity and romance to any shaded vertical space.
This self-clinging vine climbs with aerial rootlets, making it ideal for stone walls, shaded fences, tree trunks, or the north side of a structure. Over time, it becomes a grand, textural feature that feels like it’s always been part of the landscape.
It’s not flashy in a nursery pot, which is why you rarely see it offered—but in the garden, it’s one of the most impressive and enduring climbers you can plant.
