Vintage Erik Pløen Bowl Set
Norwegian Studio Ceramics | Signed PLØEN NORWAY
This rare matched set of stoneware bowls was created by Erik Pløen during his mature period in the 1960s, widely regarded as the most accomplished and collectible phase of his career.
Pløen was a leading figure in post-war Norwegian studio ceramics, working at a moment when Scandinavian artists were redefining the relationship between craft, modernism, and daily life. Rejecting industrial production, he remained firmly committed to the studio tradition, allowing material, glaze chemistry, and kiln atmosphere to play an active role in the finished work. His ceramics are characterized not by surface decoration, but by depth, restraint, and an exceptional understanding of fire.
These bowls exemplify Pløen’s classic stoneware language. The iron-rich clay body, layered reduction glazes, and interior firing halos reveal the movement of heat and minerals during firing—visual records of process rather than applied ornament. Although conceived as a set, each bowl retains subtle individual variation, underscoring their authenticity as hand-built studio works.

Context & Rarity
Comparable works by Erik Pløen are consistently dated by Scandinavian galleries and retailers to the mid-to-late 1960s. While individual bowls occasionally surface in Norway, intact matched sets of this quality are notably uncommon, and rarely encountered in the United States. Once absorbed into private or institutional collections, such sets are seldom dispersed.
Significance
This set represents the qualities that define Pløen’s lasting importance: technical mastery, restraint, and a profound sensitivity to material and fire. Quiet in presence yet deeply resolved, these bowls stand as exemplary works of Scandinavian studio ceramics from the mid-20th century.
